On Thursday 8 December 2016, the Melbourne Academy End of Year Celebration took place at the beautiful Fitzroy Town Hall.
This was Melbourne Academy's biggest end of year celebration yet with over 180 people attending.
The event was opened by the local Mayor who, as a former teacher and Assistant Principal, kept reiterating throughout the ceremony just how impressed she was with every aspect of the program.
In what was also a best ever, the Academy had close to 20 young people graduating from Senior VCAL.
Many young people overcame their fears to speak on the day, and shared their inspiring stories of how far they had journeyed to get to where they were today – confident now to stand up in front of a large crowd and accept their VCAL certificate.
Young mums shared the challenges of parenting and attending class. Connect Youth students talked about how they came into the program thinking they were useless, only to discover a welcoming environment where they could flourish.
Students from every class thanked staff for their tireless work and staff sang the praises of young people who had proven to themselves and the world that they had the ‘grit’ to overcome and succeed.
This event truly proved that the Academy is a unique community, where education and wellbeing blend together to create a sense of family.
The event was also lots of fun and students had the opportunity to dress up in beautiful donated clothing (some donated from the Channel 10 wardrobe), have their hair and make-up done by volunteer hair and beauty students, get their photo snapped at the ‘crazy props Polaroid photo booth’, and enjoy great food and drinks.
This was an incredible event and one that staff and students were so proud to be part of.
A big thank you to all staff and students for making this event possible. Melbourne City Mission can’t wait to see what 2017 brings!
